The Tolkien Mailing Competition took place for the 18th time in this academic year, and it was international for the 11th time. There was one big change compared to the first decade of the international category: this year participation in the Quendi category was open not only for individual competitors, but also for teams.

Az alábbiakban a 18. Országos és 11. Nemzetközi Tolkien Levelező Verseny nemzetközi, és az egyéni versenyzők mellett idén először csapatoknak is meghirdetett quendi kategóriájában elért végeredmények olvashatók.

In the third round the Quendi teams and those of the individual competitors who choose to face the creative challenges had to design a dragon-mask, befitting even a Dwarf fighting among the forces of Belegost in the Battle of Unnumbered Tears. They could choose any technique, so a drawing of the mask was just as acceptable as a photo of a three-dimensional, wearable piece. And as this task was first used in the Hungarian Nolda category of last year, in this post we present the works submitted by the previous Nolda and the current Quendi competitors together.

A quendik idei harmadik vizuális kreatív feladatát a tavalyi nolda kategóriától lestük el, így ebben a posztban vegyesen találjátok a két versenyzői kör, a tavalyi noldák és az idei quendik megoldásait. Tavalyi, magyar megfogalmazásában a feladat így szólt: ...egy általad választott technikával mutass meg nekünk egy maszkot, amelyet akár Azaghâl harcosai is viselhettek volna, és amely elég védelmet adhat még egy Glaurunghoz hasonló borzalmas sárkánnyal szemben is! Megrajzolhatod, megfestheted a maszkot, igénybe veheted a legújabb kor embereinek eszközeit, vagy akár kézzel fogható, valóban viselhető maszkot is készíthetsz.

Az idei quendi kategória második írásos kreatív kihívásában beleriandi birodalmakat kellett haikuban felidézni: az alábbiakban Ossiriand, Hithlum, Nargothrond és Doriath képeit olvashatjátok (angolul).

This was the task: “Elven poems are thought of as beautiful but incredibly long pieces of poetry that no one apart from them would be able to memorise. Prove this wrong by writing a total of four haikus, each representing one of the following realms of the lost Beleriand: Ossiriand, Hithlum, Nargothrond, Doriath.”

Let’s see the results! (Or, at least, one fourth of them. Plus an easter egg.)

Ilúvatar said, “Behold the snow, and the cunning work of frost!”, in which the bitter cold of Morgoth ended up in something what is not only beautiful, but let us admit, a source of fun (of course only in case you are not fighting for your life in the Helcaraxë but have the warm fires of your own halls waiting for you once you had enough). “But of bliss and glad life there is little to be said”, so let’s make this into a picture instead! This time our Quendi competitors were asked to imagine a nice winter day from these days of bliss, and choose a dwellings of Elves, cover it with snow, and show some named characters from the well-known stories enjoying the funs of winter, snow, and ice (they did not have to be all Elves).

A második fordulóban a quendi versenyzőknek egy tünde lakhelyet kellett hóval borítva és a telet kiélvező ismert szereplőkkel benépesítve ábrázolnia. A beérkezett alkotások egyike egyből fel is került a friss Lassi Laurië címlapjára!

We have already shared here a bit of the creative works received in the first Quendi round this year, now let’s see the pictures! In this task competitors had to recreate a scene from the Third Age where people from at least three different races had a conversation recorded in the books. The scene had to be made of objects collected in nature: leaves, nuts, flowers, etc.

A quendi kategória idei első fordulójában a versenyzőknek a természetben gyűjtött levelekből, termésekből és egyebekből kellett összerakniuk egy olyan harmadkori, a könyvekben leírt jelenetet, ahol legalább három különböző nép képviselői beszélgettek egymással. Nagyon izgalmas megoldások születtek!

In the first round of the Tolkien Mailing Competition of 2022/2023, participants of the international Quendi category were asked to make a picture of a rarely depicted place of their choice from Beleriand.

Ezen a héten kezdődik meg az idei Tolkien Levelező Verseny, de addig is, amíg készülnek az újabb kreatív alkotások, van még bőven mit közzétennünk a korábbi évekből. Ebben a tavalyi feladatban a Quendi kategória versenyzőinek Beleriand ritkán ábrázolt (és a Tolkien Gateway-en is kép nélkül maradt) vidékeit kellett megrajzolniuk, megfesteniük.

The Hungarian Tolkien Society organised its first National Tolkien Mailing Competition in 2007. The international “Quendi” category was launched a bit later, but already 10 years ago: we first announced it on 1 September 2012. Trying to spread the news, we got help from several Tolkien societies and communities all around the world, and in that first year we have already received 35 applications from 16 different countries. But during the 10 years which have passed since, we reached a total of 42 countries! So, let’s see some statistics…

2012 szeptemberében hirdettük meg először a Tolkien Levelező Verseny nemzetközi kategóriáját. Az első évben 16, az első tíz évben összesen 42 országból érkeztek jelentkezések.

In the second round of the Quendi category of 2021/2022, we have asked our competitors to choose and draw suitable symbols for an imaginary Tolkien-themed edition of the Dobble (Spot it!) game: eight simple images which have an obvious Middle-earth connection; are easily recognisable even in small size; and can be identified by one word/name/expression.

A 2021/2022 évad második fordulójában arra kértük a quendi kategória versenyzőit, hogy egy Tolkien-tematikájú Dobble-játék lehetséges szimbólumait rajzolják meg: egyszerű, kis méretben is felismerhető, egy egyértelmű kifejezéssel megnevezhető, és természetesen Középföldéhez kapcsolódó ábrákat. Öt versenyző negyven rajzából összesen 19 különböző szimbólum gyűlt össze: ezek némelyikével időközben már a Lassi Laurië lapjain is találkozhattatok.

The Tolkien Mailing Competition took place for the 16th time in this academic year, and it was international for the 9th time. We had 43 registered participants from 18 countries: Armenia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Croatia, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Norway, Peru, Russia, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, UK and USA. Here you can see the final results of those 12 who made through all 5 rounds of the competition.

The Tolkien Mailing Competition took place for the 15th time in this academic year, and it was international for the 8th time. We had 33 participants: from Australia, Austria, Chile, Croatia, Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Norway, Perú, Philippines, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, UK and USA. In the previous post you could read the stories told by Eärwen and Maglor, and here we present those told by Dís and Gaffer Gamgee. The only child from our original list who did not get a bedtime story became Éowyn. If anybody wants to write that (a story by Éomer), we would like to read (and perhaps publish) it, as well :)

Story time! In the fourth round we have asked the participants to write bedtime stories. The story could be one told by Eärwen to Nerwen; by Maglor to Elros and Elrond; by Dís to Fíli and Kili; by Éomer to Éowyn; or by Gaffer Gamgee to Elanor; and it had to be suitable to the age and culture of the storyteller and the audience. Which option would you guess to be the most popular of these?

In the 3rd round of the Quendi competition, one of the creative tasks was the writing of 3 limericks. The people and places referred to had to be from Tolkien's works of fiction, and at least one of them from the first three ages of Middle-earth. We were amazed to find that Treebeard became the only character starring in more than one limerick!

Autumn comes and the game is on: the tenth Tolkien Mailing Competition is about to start and with it the international Quendi category for the third time. (Click here for details.)

Bár már elmúlt a karácsony, egy bejegyzés erejéig mégis visszaszállunk a múlt év végére. A Hobbit kategória csapatainak tolkieni ihletésű karácsonyfadíszt kellett készíteniük, és képet küldeniük róla, lehetőleg egy karácsonyfán lefényképezve. Most a legötletesebbeket mutatjuk meg - hátha valakinek kedve támad, és jövőre ő is ilyen rendhagyó díszekkel ékesíti a fenyőt!

Mielőtt ezt a blogot elindítottuk, a Tolkien Levelező Versenyre készült kreatív alkotások leggyakrabban a Lassi Laurië lapjain tűntek fel: de mivel a megjelenés idejére általában már lezárult a verseny és így a kommunikáció az alkotókkal, sokan talán nem is értesültek róla, hogy munkáik megjelentek. Sajnos néha (főleg a képek esetén) nem is lehet egyértelműen megállapítani, hogy TLV-alkotásról van-e szó, illetve, hogy melyik csapat munkája (az utóbbi számokkal ellentétben korábban az illusztrációk készítői nem a cikkeknél, csak az Impresszumban kerültek említésre). Szóval ebben a cikkben, nem mondom, hogy a teljesség igénye, de minden bizonnyal a teljesség megvalósítása nélkül, megpróbáltam összeszedni a TLV-vel kapcsolatos dolgokat a Lassi Laurië korábbi számaiból. Képek esetén csak a készítő csapat nevét, mivel az eredeti feladatokat beazonosítani elég nehézkes lenne, ránézésre címet adni meg fura.

Many creative works received during the Tolkien Mailing Competition have been published in the Lassi Laurië magazine of the Hungarian Tolkien Society. In this post I try to collect all TLV-related content in the issues from Lassi Laurië. The last three issues of year 2014 and 2015 have illustrations by Quendi competitors! Task IV of the Quendi 2nd round:

"The Lord of the Rings as we know it is a translation of a chronicle written by Mr. Bilbo and Mr. Frodo Baggins. But it contains several scenes where the chroniclers were not present and had to rely on the stories told by others: some of whom do not like to speak much, while others would perhaps make their own roles more colourful. Describe the scene and write the dialogue between Frodo and one of his companions as he tries to find out all the details needed for his chronicle. It is even better if you can also include some of their thoughts during the conversation. Try to highlight the details amply described without the storywriter being present. How much had he to invent?"

A második fordulóban a Quendi kategória versenyzőinek azon jelenetek egyikét kellett megírniuk, ahol A Gyűrűk Ura történetén dolgozó Frodó vagy Bilbó a kaland többi résztvevőjével beszélgetve próbálja begyűjteni az infókat azokhoz a részekhez, amelyeknél nem voltak jelen. Eimeria írásában Legolas részletezi a rohani táj éjszakai szépségeit, Mirachnál pedig Trufa emlékszik vissza Théoden királyra: mindketten Frodónak mesélnek.

A IX. Tolkien Levelező Verseny csapatos nevezői idén a második fordulóban egy rendhagyó feladatot is kaptak: plakátot kellett tervezniük a Magyar Tolkien Társaság 2015. évi nyári gyerektáborának. A beérkezett 33 megoldást a tábor szervezői értékelték. Ígéretük szerint a legjobb alkotást felhasználják a tábor valódi plakátjához is, valamint a legméltóbb csapat tagjai kedvezménnyel vehetnek majd részt a táborban.

The Hungarian Tolkien Society organises a summer camp for children for the third time this summer. In the second round the team categories had the task to design a poster for this camp: in this post you can see the two best solutions according to the judgement of the camp's organisers.
