J. R. R. Tolkien: Individual, Community, Society
The chief focus of the upcoming 5th International Tolkien Conference is the social aspect of Tolkien’s oeuvre, especially the role of the individual in the community. Researchers are encouraged to explore the topic in light of its literary and cultural implications, as well as to discuss in a philosophical-theological or literary context the ethical dimensions of the societies depicted in Tolkien’s works. Papers more loosely connected to the main subject are also welcome. We wish to reach and involve in the expanding field of Tolkien Studies more and more university students, professors and researchers both in Hungary and abroad.

The series of Tolkien conferences in Hungary was started by Gergely Nagy in 2003, a former member of the Society and the most significant researcher of Tolkien's works in Hungary. Mr. Nagy organised three conferences in collaboration with the universities of Pécs and Szeged. The fourth conference was organised by the Hungarian Tolkien Society and Károli Gáspár University of the Reformed Church in Hungary in 2012. Keynote speakers were prominent Tolkien scholars such as Verlyn Flieger and John Garth.
The Hungarian Tolkien Society is looking forward to welcoming members of many other Tolkien societies among the participants, particularly among the speakers, of the conference. Besides the academic programme, we want to provide an occasion for you to meet our community and see more of our beautiful capital city. Ask for details at konferencia/at/tolkien/dot/hu.
